Shoulder

The shoulder trades stability for range. That is what lets you throw, lift and reach overhead, and it is why the shoulder gets injured the way it does.

The approach

How shoulder care runs here

Shoulder problems usually announce themselves in one of three ways: it hurts overhead, it feels loose or unstable, or it has lost range it used to have. Each points somewhere different.

A large share of shoulder pain improves with rest, medication, activity change and a properly built therapy program. That is where we start unless the injury makes it pointless.

When the rotator cuff or a ligament is genuinely torn, repair restores what therapy cannot. For advanced arthritis or an irreparable cuff, shoulder replacement — including reverse replacement — is a well-established answer.
